Training Put on HOLD

This year is the year of the races for me. I have signed up to do a couple of marathons, a triathlon and I hope to run a half marathon in the fall. I am very excited for each race and training has been a lot of fun. I love to run, it gives me time for me and I feel that I am being proactive with my other goal (loosing weight). HOWEVER, for the last month or so I have started to have severe pain in my inner lower calves. I have tried massaging them, cold and hot compresses, medicine and rest. Nothing has worked. I finally had a doctor take a look and I have shin splints from over training. Over training? I am just following my training schedule. I have been running consistently for the last six months! I have been pushing myself too far on my short runs and aggravating my shins. It hurts to walk at time, but that is something I HAVE to do. After talking to my doctor, friends and Dave I have to put my training on hold, take my anti-inflammatory medicine and hope that the shin splints take care of themselves quickly. I didn't run today and I will not run for the next week. I feel that this might set me back just a bit but I have no choice. I am worried about it but "asi es la vida!"

It's my prayer that my skinny chicken legs/calves/shins recover quickly!

I hope the pain goes away quickly and that you can get back out there soon...especially since it is something you love to do so much. Best Wishes.

Sometimes a little break is a good thing. I hope the pain goes away soon too. I have heard that not having the right shoes or when is time for a new pair that can happen.

Oh, I'm so sorry. That's so frustrating. My hubby was training for a marathon a couple years ago and had to stop because his knees started having major problems. He was so bummed! Hope things clear up and you can get back on schedule!

I am so sorry Laura! It's frustrating when you love to do something so much and then you can't do it. I hope it all gets better soon so that you can get back out there!!!

I'm so sorry, Laura! That must be so frustrating. Maybe you should try to do more cross-training so you aren't putting so much strain on one particular muscle group (?).

I think you are doing the right thing. Giving those legs a rest will help.

So sorry. It's so hard to have to evaluate when you are loving the runs.
Last year I had to put my training on hold due to my body struggling with the demands of nursing. It was a hard decision, but it worked out for the best.
GOOD LUCK!
